Here are the excerpts relating to Les Mis and Eponine:
Heaven Knows I’m in Les Miserables Now: To play Eponine is an ambition of many an aspiring musical theatre actress, and Compton was no exception. After a tough audition process and initial rejection, she’s now delighted to be discovering the character. “It looks on the surface that she’s a girl that loves a guy and that’s it,” she says. “But it’s not. She’s got a very complex, very tough background, and I think I’ve really grown in this last year, coming back to audition for the role and getting it this time round. I love playing her, because it isn’t just ‘Oh, I love him.' It’s so much more than that. Her journey, up until her death, is so selfless. She never once feels sorry for herself. The trick is, it’s so difficult to want the audience to feel sorry for you, but not feel sorry for yourself. The fantastic thing is that I don’t feel miserable when I play her. She’s got so much energy, and she doesn’t feel sorry for herself—she’s tough.” And then there are the beautiful songs. “‘On My Own’ is a wonderful song,” she exclaims. “I love singing it, and I get nervous every single time the intro starts. To go out and sing a song that’s been going for 22 years, but make it your own as well, is quite scary.”
In The Hands of Fate: Compton is excited about her future and philosophical about the circumstances that led her to Les Mis. “It was a very strange beginning to the year. I had the most horrendous audition for Les Mis. I thought, no, I’ve blown it. Then I got the call saying, you have to come and see Cameron Mackintosh tomorrow. I suddenly went, 'Oh, great!' It was something that I was meant to do. I really believe that things happen for a reason, and it was obviously meant to come full circle and come into my life at some point.”
Drew Sarich (Valjean)- I saw him first as enjolras and didn't care for him much there. As Jean Valjean, he was decent. No DOUBT his voice is brilliant but he sounded and looked to young for the part. The man can hit some high notes (his 2-4-6-0-111 was AMAZING) but the youth took away from his performance. Although he was SOOO nice to me at the stage door.
Robert Hunt (Javert)- I can't think of words to describe him. he was just incredable. His acting was so passionate and on target. His voice gave me chills. After 'Stars' I was covered in chills. Norm Lewis was my favorite Javert (he is AMAZING!!!!) but Robert Hunt was a CLOSE second.
Lea Salonga (Fantine)- Do I really need to explain. She was so amazing and so passionate. AH! I can't believe i've seen Lea twice. She was really sweet at the stage door. There truly are no words to describe this woman.
Adam Jacobs (Marius)- The first time I saw him (when the revival first opened), I didn't care for him much. He was a great singer but overacted. The past two time he has improved MILES. he (along with tim howar) is my favorite Marius. Great voice and beautiful acting. Also VERY nice at the stage door. Realllly cute too.
Ali Ewoldt (Cosette)- I just adore her. She is so gorgeous and just has a beautiful, songbird voice. Amazing acting during the finale. If her and Adam had a baby it would be the most beautiful baby in the world.
Max Von Essen (Enjolras)- started out sharp when he first came out but really got alot better. he is a great Enjolras. I never had the privalege to see Aaron Lazar but Max was still fantastic as Enjolras. Good, sturdy performance.
Chip Zien (Theinardier)- Hilarious!!!! I prefer him to Gary Beach (sorry Gary, I still love ya). Chip was so sweet at the stage door. A guy holding a phone that was pretty old and outdated (not extremly) Chip thought it was one of those Iphones and was embarrassed when he was corrected. I just love him!
Ann Harada (Mme. Theinardier)- SO funny. Chip and her made a great team. Much better than the first time I saw her, She constantly madae me laugh. I hardly recoginze her when she came out at the stage door. She's alot different without that big red wig!
Megan McGinnis (Eponine)- BEAUTIFUL VOICE! It really is gorgeous. I really enjoyed her performance although the whole time I wanted to go up on stage and rough her up a bit. She seemed to sweet and too shy. Although I like a varity of Eponines. Great overall.
I was lucky enough to get my pic taken with Drew, LEA, Adam, Ali, Megan and Ann. And auotgraphs from those people and Chip (I went to the stage door twice, the first i forgot my camera then when I went back I just got pics). Great trip overall. I also saw Phantom, A Chorus Line, Curtains, Spelling Bee, Mamma Mia, Chicago and Legally Blonde. I would suggest all of them- they ALL were AMAZING!
Okay... I just got two Les Miz revival DVD bootlegs in the mail... One with the original cast, save Drew Sarich as Enjolras... The other with the newer cast (Lea Salonga, Mandy Bruno, etc)... Drew plays Javert in that DVD. They are both great quality DVDs (the original cast is practically pro shot)... They are filmed in wide screen. The Lea DVD has a lot of heads and "oh shit, here comes an usher" moments, but still has amazing closeups. Lea really is a stunning Fantine... Mandy, well, I think it is safe to say that she grew into the role. She was pretty good when I saw here live, but she really was pretty terrible in this DVD. Celia is THE Eponine.
